67 LEER / 67 LEARN ("we," "our," or "the Service") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your data. We process personal information in accordance with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
2. Information We Collect
Account Information:
- Email address (via Google Sign-In)
- Display name
- Profile information from your Google account
Learner Profile Information (provided by you during onboarding — every field is optional and editable at any time under your Profile page):
- Your preferred name
- Whether you use the Service as a scholar or a teacher
- Your age — we store only the derived birth year, never a full birth date
- Country (auto-detected from your network location, correctable by you)
- School stage and grade, or your field of study
- School name and curriculum programme
Why we ask: this information is used solely to personalise your tutoring — pitching explanations at the right level, pre-filling grade and language choices, and addressing you by name. We collect the minimum needed for that purpose (POPIA s10 minimality; GDPR data-minimisation).
Learning Data:
- Learning channels you create
- Messages and conversations within channels
- Subject preferences and grade level information
- Notes and learning materials you save
Usage Information:
- Interaction patterns with the AI assistant
- Features you use and how you use them
- Technical information (browser type, device information)
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your information to:
- Provide and improve the educational services
- Personalize your learning experience
- Generate AI-powered responses to your questions
- Maintain and secure your account
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the Service
- Communicate important updates about the Service
4. Third-Party AI Services
- DeepSeek (AI model provider)
- Google Gemini (AI model provider)
- OpenRouter (AI service aggregator)
- Other AI model providers we may use
These services have their own privacy policies and data handling practices. We recommend reviewing their policies as well.
5. Data Storage
Your data is stored using Firebase services provided by Google:
- Firebase Authentication: Manages your account credentials
- Cloud Firestore: Stores your learning channels, messages, and notes
- Firebase Hosting: Delivers the application to your browser
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your data with:
- AI Service Providers: To generate educational responses
- Google/Firebase: For infrastructure and authentication
- Your teacher: If a teacher invited you (or you accept a teacher's invitation), that teacher sees your name, progress and activity for the subjects they teach you — this is shown to you when you accept
- Legal Requirements: When required by law or to protect rights
7. Data Security
We implement security measures including:
- Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/SSL)
- Secure authentication through Google
- Firebase security rules to protect your data
- Regular security assessments
However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.
8. Your Rights (POPIA & GDPR)
You have the right to:
- Access and correct your personal data — your Profile page shows and edits everything you gave us
- Delete your account and data — the Account page has a "Delete my account" action that erases your data immediately (see Data Retention below for the small set of records we must keep)
- Withdraw consent at any time by deleting the relevant information from your Profile or deleting your account
- Object or complain — South African users may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (inforeg.org.za); EU users with their supervisory authority
9. Children's Privacy
The Service is designed for educational use and is used by school-going children. We take POPIA's protections for children (persons under 18) seriously:
- We collect the minimum profile information needed to teach well, and only a birth year — never a full birth date
- Self-registered users under 18 are asked to confirm that a parent or guardian knows about and is comfortable with their use of the Service; that affirmation is recorded
- Students invited by a teacher or school are covered by the consent the teacher affirms is on file (recorded in our consent register)
- A parent or guardian may exercise any of the rights in section 8 on a child's behalf via our support channels
10. Cookies and Tracking
We use essential cookies and local storage to:
- Keep you signed in
- Remember your preferences
- Analyze service performance
11. Data Retention
We retain your data as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your personal information — profile, channels, conversations, progress and activity — is erased. A small set of records is retained on a legal basis:
- Consent records — proof of the consents given (a legal record we must keep)
- Payment receipts and transaction records — required for tax and financial audit
- Aggregated, de-identified usage statistics that no longer identify you
12. International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed and stored in various countries where our service providers operate (POPIA s72 cross-border transfer applies). By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.
13. Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. We will notify you of significant changes through the application or via email.
